Zodiac Signs Surreal Animals Drawings

Surreal animals take the roles of all of the zodiac signs.

Dutch Artist Redmer Hoekstra drew all of the animals you see on this page.

It's been a long time since we have visited Hoekstra's work.  We have been a fan of his for many years.  He was one of the first artists that were ever featured here on DesignStack.

Each image is just as beautifully strange as surreal gets.  Their looks and mannerisms replicate the known signs.  This way, you can tell what is what.  That said, this is pretty much where most of the similarities end.  The rest is a quest for understanding what is actually going on.

If I might make a suggestion...  The aim here is not to make sense of all that is going on in the picture.  Seek understanding on a less strict scale and let the final realisation of the piece present itself, rather than looking for it.

The way I do it is as follows:  I remind myself of the sign.  I identify all of the different animals and details that constitute the piece.  Then the appreciation comes.  I am sure it is going to be different depending on your life experiences and how open and receptive you leave yourself.

My favourite has to be the Scorpio image.  No sting in that tail.  We simply have a fantastically comfortable and well engineered relationship to read a book.  I wonder if the scorpion turns the pages for the bunny?

The next one is Capricorn.  It's so incredibly weird.  If you turn the image upside down, it's strange in a totally different way...

I know what some might be thinking.  On the other hand, I think the beginning of the week is perfect for surrealism.  For me, it's when you need it the most.  Just look at the surreal world we live in...  Monday and Tuesday are when it hits you the hardest.  : )
