Kamikatsu in Tokushima - Japan, is pushing to becoming a zero waste society. At the moment they are achieving 80% recycling, with the plant acting as a sorting place for the materials and a store, where second hand items are sold to the public. Hiroshi Nakamura & NAP decided to get architecture to help with this way of thinking, by constructing this pub, or public house, using recycled materials. From the windows and casings, on the one of a kind 8m high elevation, to the abandoned tiles for the flooring. The furniture was bought from the recycle centre and discarded bottles were used to construct a chandelier, the list just goes on and on... The high elevation in the food and drink area, removes the hot air from the diners in the summer whilst the insulation provided by the double layer of windows + the carbon-neutral radiant heater fed by branches from the forest, keep the place warm during the winter. Did I forget to mention that they have their own brewing facility and small warehouse in this building? This type of of architectural sustainability, is proving to the surrounding inhabitants and people around the world, what can be achieved with what we have here and now and that the production of new items, can slow down.
