They look like real animals paused in time.
Paul Miller is a full-time wildlife and pet portrait artist, based in the UK.
These pastel drawings seem to research and replicate every minute detail that makes the animal look the way it does. It's almost an abstract case of teleportation.
Every tiny part of the initial reference photo is dematerialised and formed in the artist's brain. Then the arduous tasks of reconstituting it begins, which is done with pastel pencils.
I don't have a copy of the original photo, but I can't imagine it's any better than these illustrations. Have a look below and see what you think.
