The different backgrounds help give the image a slightly unique look and a variation on the feeling you get from the face.
Stumpf mentions one of these portraits is: "Not one of my best works." I know the one the artist is referring to and I can't see it. I can't see the problem with it. Just the positives. Without sharing it with you, can you see one which is out of place in the company of the rest?
