Drawings and paintings within drawings and paintings of animals specifically: Cats, dogs, rabbits and a bear.
Dominic Phillips depicted all of the animals you see on this page.
The double exposure is a technique that was originally started by photographers. Drawing and painting artists have adopted it with great success. Amongst all of Phillips's pieces, I have chosen the ones that incorporate this style.
I would divide the art into two parts: The ones that feature an inner picture of an animal and the ones that feature other scenes. The outer frame is always an animal, by the way.
The first two images go together for me. The outer frame of the animals face each other and they share so much in the execution of the piece. Lovely warm colours that set the scene during a sunset. Both inner rabbits are absolutely focused on something... It's not immediately apparent what. It's something left to our imagination to figure out.
The third image down is my next pick. It's the one of the lovely black cat looking outside the window. A curious interest in what is going on in the world. It looks like such a familiar view, as cats love to do that.
My last mention is drawing number nine. I really like how the running rabbit of the frame matches the running one inside. There is quite a lot going on here, It doesn't seem to be an image taken from this world. As well as the forest and the stars, there seems to be a wavy ground and a spiral vortex, of some kind, in the background.
Have a look at animals within animals, with interesting goings-on...
