Charcoal Sketch Portraits

Faces that express feelings and emotions, we might never find out the cause of.

Shima Rabiee describes herself as an Artist / Architect / Designer.

Her sketch portraits are the ones that most impress me. With different levels of finish, some of these charcoal people, seem to be phasing out, or into existence.

Models that are able to emote are a must, if the artist is going to capture more than just a likeness. In these drawings you can almost feel that extra part of the person, that comes through the look they are giving.

We don't know them, yet we feel we understand something about them, if we can interpret what that expression is about. That is why it's so easy for many us to "humanise"; we take what we know of expressions and match them to other humans or animals, to make sense of the face in front or us.

The way we extrapolate inner feeling of a person from the way they look, is in my opinion, the reason we love and are so fascinated by portraits.

  1. I thought it was interesting how this artist used
the charcoal to swipe across the faces to give some other aspect to the portrait, but I would still like to see portraits other than women w pouty lips and half closed eyes or pencil portraits that are near photograph. Not that those are not interesting, or that it does not take a lot of talent to do them, but the faces all seem to be the same. Nothing out of the ordinary. A lot of the same facial expressions, that make them all, no matter who does them similar. One sees so many pouty lipped drawings that even though the technique might be differnt, the core drawings are the same, and that tends to lead to commonality.
    know what I mean?

    1. Hi sunshine,

Men are rare in modern portraiture, as are a mix of races and ages.
That said, this post has 2 men and 3 older people.

The eyes half closed has been cheapened by companies using it for advertising, to sell you something.
They are also facial expressions of genuine emotions. Forget the cheesy ads, we should reclaim these looks for art, as a sincere moment we all have, when going through something.

As always, it's great hearing from you, thank you very much for taking the time to leave a comment.

I hope you have a wonderful Friday. 🌿️🌺️🌿️

    1. I know that there is a lot of art out there that just exalts certain values in looks and certain stereotypes, but I really don't think that the drawings in this post one one of them.

That said, your opinion is very welcome here and I hope you have a fantastic weekend.🌿️🌺️🌿️

  3. I think that subject matter goes through trends as well. At least that is what it seems to me. Like we are seeing a lot of drawings like this post and (like in the next post of animals drawn in unexpected ways or places, or making a statement about how dirty the ocean is (more of a political statement).)

Those seem pretty common as well. (as far as subject matter) Don't get me wrong, the work itself, the techniques are very good, some even fantastic, but in the realm and scope of originality, there is a lot of commonality.

Maybe that is why I feel that the drawings lack something. It is like when you go into a gallery lately (if you find one open that is! ) You can look through it and see things two ways. One the technique and skill of the artist, and the commonality of the subject matter.
And every once in a while you stumble across a painting or drawing where you go... "oh!!! this is wonderful!"

It is out of the ordinary by some degree that separates it from the rest, and that lies not only in technique but content as well.

The old masters were careful to contain this concept in their artistry. Elements of subject that set them apart from others.

I do so enjoy seeing these posts! It really makes me think deeper about what I myself am producing!

    1. That is a the whole point of sites like DesignStack, we are here to show a small snapshot of the art, or whatever the subject matter might be.
There is a lot of art out there, more than I would ever see in a lifetime. I am sure I am missing out on plenty of good art, but it's not through a lack of looking.

Of all of the art that is out there, I only get to see a fraction. Of that, I choose the ones that interest, inspire and like the most. We are talking of a subsection of a subsection of a subsection. I have never claimed to showcase every type of art here, I just try and make it as varied as I can.

You have commented on this site quite a few times, but the part I most like, the one part that tells me a little more about you, is the last sentence in your last comment.

It's a beautiful thought and full of potential.
There is absolutely no sarcasm or attempt to be patronising in my next words, but just absolute sincerity.

If you see something wrong with the art that is being shown, or there are gaping omissions in content, as an artist you are in the perfect position t rectify that. Let your work underscore the inadequacies of the art field as you see them.

Feeling strongly and passionate about something and knowing what you don't like is a great start. Finding a way of expressing it through art and starting to re-balance the field is what really matters.

I hope you find the answers to these questions, which are going to make your art unique to you and appreciated and understood by others.

  4. What I have learned over the years is, I can always gleen something from all art that I look at. Sometimes it is what I should do or try or develope, sometimes it is what I shouldn't do or try or incorporate (develope). All valuable in the process of creating.

    1. That is a great attitude towards art, that I am sure will see you grow as an artist.

The artists that are featured here get a chance to showcase their work, as an artist yourself, I am sure you can understand how important this is.

You have made your point about the portraits 5 or 6 times on different posts. Making a point once or twice is expressing your view, 5 or 6 times feels more like a protest.
I don't think the artists deserve it; their work might not be to your taste, but there is nothing wrong or offensive about it.

Can I please ask you, as their fellow artist, to stop making the same pint every time a style of portrait you don't like comes up?

You have always been polite and I really don't think you are making this point with malice, so please comment about anything else you want.

I hope you enjoy the rest of your weekend and hope to hear from you soon and often, on other posts.🌿️🌺️🌿️

      Take care
