Portrait that make a statement.
Artist Annie Murphy Robinson achieves these drawings using what she calls: "charcoal sanding technique".
I caught a shot glimpse of her at work on a short video she posted on her social media page. I am not sure if this is the technique she talks about above.
The title sums up the way I see these portraits: The darkness in the black and white drawings adds a real intensity to the scene. The skill is creating this atmosphere, but maintaining a full of contrast of the tones making the detailing very easy to read.
The second refers to the expressions; strong direct gaze, by the model, into the eyes of the artist (and by extension us), as she transfers their likeness to these realistic looking portraits.
