Swiss-British artist Peter Stalder drew all of the likenesses you see on this page.
At first, I have to admit that I found these drawings puzzling. They are drawn using color pencils and yet, to start with, they looked like they were produced from a very different medium.
I made a closer inspection and now they seem to make more sense. All of the sheets of paper are of colours other than white. In many cases there is a general graphite outline and then two sections: One that contains all of the strong colours and the other one that contains very subtle wisps of colour. The latter is not strong enough to make a marked impression, but is just about perceptible to give our brain a more defined sense of the contours of the face. They are usually white or off-white.
The subtlety of the detailing is exquisite. Something that truly impresses. If you want a better look at the drawing press it and it will enlarge. All but the first one at the top of the page.
To get an overall feel of the style, have a look at the first four drawings. They seem to encapsulate all of the relevant variations you are likely to get.
Spend some time inspecting these portraits. I think you will find it time well spent.
