Jon Carling is one of those artists that makes surrealism and fantasy an amazing place full of excitement and adventure, for his inhabitants to live in.
I like to look at art steeped in a surreal theme. I then wait for the characters within, to start suggesting a story. Why are they there? What are they doing? Etc.
Carling's work is subtle in its expression. An initial view of simplicity is swapped almost immediately for one of complexity and a layering of meaning.
For example of initial simplicity of the drawing, giving way to complexity of execution, look at the drawing I called: "Powering though obstacles"... The apparent randomness of the linework, perfectly contained outside the triangular form, which allows the character access to it. As far as meaning is concerned... This is just one of the meanings you can attribute to it.
I confess a bias towards this kind of art: I hope you will enjoy it as much as I have.
