Animal sculptures created by using a food byproduct.
"In 2006 Niigata City and Musashino Art University (known as "Musabi" in Japan) collaborated to create "Wara Art," massive artwork made of rice straw. In 2008, the Wara Art Festival began as an event to exhibit Wara Art."
The impressive gigantic sculptures, are the result of the collaboration between the students and the farmers from Nishikan Ward.
In the first image above, you can see the bear in mid construction and the completed animal next to it. (You can see these images better below.) In the first image, you can appreciate the extensive scaffolding set in place to support the straw and give the animal its shape. The straw is secured in place and then shaped to match the appropriate size and contours of the creature.
This post includes representation of animals alive today and the ones now extinct.
