Re-purposed Toilet - Flat / Apartment

With our cities becoming more and more congested, it is becoming very difficult and more expensive to find a place to live in.  A bit of lateral thinking is what is needed, Architectural practice Lamp give us an example of the new type of ingenuity we need to adopt if we are going to make more liveable space in our cities.  They made a Flat from what used to be an underground public toilet.  Before you switch off in disgust look at it and tell me if you wouldn't live in it.  The Flat / Apartment is in Crystal Palace south London in the UK.
it is a 1 Bedroom, about, 56 m2 600 square feet, it comes with internal garden (I am guessing it originally Toilets had 2 entrances Male and Female and 1 was retained for the entrance to the flat and the other one closed off, the stairs were removed and made into a garden).  Fantastic natural lighting you would not guess from the pictures that you were underground.

Lego 3D Printer

You might think, yet another 3D Printer, but this is made out of Lego and bits and pieces he scavenged from other electronics he had lying about. Cash Strapped 20 year old engineering student Matthew Kreuger didn't have between $800-$2500 to buy a 3D Printer so he built his own. This is not yet the finish product, as there is more programming and testing that needs doing.

These are the articles we love to report about here at Design Stack. Not only does it show that there are many different ways of producing the same thing, but that technology doesn't have to be prohibitively expensive to work.

Wet Sand And Play-Doh

As the title suggests this is sand that has some of the characteristics of Play-Doh.  It is made from 98% sand and 2% polymer.  Brookstone sell this product that brings the beach to your home, with out all the problems associate with the sand you find on the beach.  It is soft and stretchy, it sticks to itself but not to your fingers. does not dry out and it is non toxic.  As well as the photographs we have included two videos to showcase the properties better, (the videos are really worth looking at).

Flower Petal Birds

Malaysian Material Artist (if that is a thing) Hong Yi, aka Red, produces art using all sorts of materials, the one we have chosen to display today is Flower Petals, which seems, she mostly takes from her garden.  She is an Architect by profession but she is known as the artist who loves to paint, but not with a paintbrush.

Body Paint

Incredible versatile Artist Johannes Stötter is a musician as well as a skilled fine-art body-painter.  In the image above we have a frog and if you look very carefully you will be able to discern the 5 people it took to compile this artistic installation.  Can you see them?  On some of these pictures you will have to look carefully, as the models almost disappear.

Sinks for Small Spaces

Pixel is the name of this incredibly useful foldable sink, perfect for small spaces.  You could put it, for example, in the work place in a corridor between two rooms you want people to was their hands before entering, or the obvious ones a small flat or a Hostel.  The basin is made of collapsible silicone.  The rail on the side retracts as well for a more compact design.  When closed the Pixel measures 16cm or 6 1/4 inches. Rafa Arnalte is the designer and product developer of little wonder.

Finger Painting 2

Italian Artist Paolo Trilo originally started off working in prestigious advertising agencies but then found his true calling, finger Painting.  He only paints with black and white and shades of grey.  He manages to project incredible strength and movement in his paintings.  We have included in the article, a video that demonstrates his impressive technique.

Hyper-Realistic Breaking Bad

Incredibly popular television Series, Braking Bad, is about to start in August for its final season.  These are just some of the Hyper-Realistic Pencil Drawings from Dr Pencil.  Rick Fortson has just come back from a 30 year break from drawing landscape oil paintings to start drawing these incredible Portraits.  Well worth the wait if you ask me.

Fun rings of miniature food from Kawaii Cute Miniature Food Rings.  They also make other types of jewellery including earrings pendants and Japanese jewellery.  The prices for the amount of work and detail seems to be very reasonable.

Street Art Uplift

Talented Graffiti artist that goes by the name SmugOne has created these works of art on dilapidated and broken down buildings.
I missed it at first, but the people cleaning the graffiti in the image above are part of the painting and not real people.

Your Face

Do you want a copy of your face? Now it is easy to get Real Face say they will get it to you in 2 weeks.  They also say that they can add moles and make corrections if required.  For best results they take photographs and an impression of the face.  As I understand the mask is 3D Printed and then finished by hand.  The real face is on the Left.

A mixture of sculptures and accessories / jewellery Stacey Lee Webber constructs her pieces using coins in a variety of designs, useful as well as great looking. Her intricate pieces are made out of Pennies and Dimes.

Shark Wheel have done just that, the company asserts that  these new skateboard wheels provide high friction on soft surfaces and low friction on hard surfaces, that makes for a more enjoyable ride. Coffee Latte Image Printer

Here comes yet an other way of printing.  A small company, Let's Cafe that owns kiosks in over 2000 Taiwanese convenient shops has come up with a novel idea on how to compete with the multinational coffee chains.  When you go to one of their machines you upload one of your images and the coffee machine will print the picture, with edible powder, on your latte. Have a look at the video.

Hyper Realistic Pencil Drawings

Passionate self taught Artist creates these life like Hyper Realistic Drawings just with a pencil.   Franco Clun has created quite a few of these drawings, we have showcased just a few.  Pay special attention to the Self Portrait and the Old Men drawings that have a lot of detail and expression.

Map Paintings

An all together different use of maps, Artist Paul Morstad uses Cartographic Maps as a base for his paintings and collages. He draws inspirations from the animal life and nature from his native Vancouver in Canada.  Monstad uses a variety of techniques to compile his work including Collage, Water Colour, Gouache and Oil Paints.

Egg Carvings

We have seen "Egg Art" in different formats, making images by puncturing the shell, painting the egg and now Chinese Artist Pu Derong (via news.xinhuanet) actually carves the image on the 0.3 mm thick eggshell. Not From an artistic background and no formal teaching this self thought Artist has produced some very delicate and exquisite art pieces.
