When you look at these sculptures, layers of wood would probably not be your first guess; it wasn't mine either.
When I first looked at them I thought it was cut paper, colored or painted to give a 3D effect. After seeing a short video, in which several layers of cut wood assembled together, I realised what I was looking at.
This is the work of Art Director Patrick Cabral, who is a freelance artist based in Manila, Philippines.
Each layer is carefully and exquisitely detailed and painted, before being added to the others, to eventually form a three dimensional structure; representing a stylised version of the animal in question.
The carving on each layer, not only adds to the beauty of the piece, but also makes it lighter both weight wise and aesthetically. They looks so intricate and delicate. It must taken a long time to design, cut and carve all the individual pieces especially on the dragon.
