Surreal looking animals. Sculptures perfectly carved and beautifully painted.
Jacobo and Maria Angeles Workshop represents not only the two founders, but also a larger movement for art. In their workshops there are apprenticeships, internships and volunteering.
They are dedicated to the production of carved copal wood figures called Tonas and Nahuales. The work is based on Mesoamerican pre-Columbian symbols.
There is so much more than what you first see. The animals, the patterns hold meanings that have been passed down through the generations.
With this post, as with all of the others in our site, I suggest you visit the artist's page. To do this just press their name. Specifically in this case, there is a wealth of information which I would only be parroting, if I included it here.
Their site feels like a beautifully structured and well explained museum exhibit. Full of interesting creatures and the stories behind them and the symbols which adorn their bodies. Don't miss out on this chance to learn more about them.
