Brown pencil, graphite and white gouache on toned paper portrait drawings.
American Artist Tyler Berry drew all of the likenesses you see on this page.
A collection of impressive portraits with varying degrees of detailing. A couple are completely realistic. Some have realistic face whilst having sketched or nebulous hair, for example. The one thing they have in common are very descriptive expressions. As I describe the individual drawings, I will spend more time on this subject.
The first drawing down makes the point of expressions very eloquently. Firstly, all of the graphics are toned down except for the face. It achieves the effect of a highlighter in bringing prominence to the face. The look is one that has so much depth. Even though you can't see the eyes, which are the receptacle of a lot of the expression repository, the weight of that gaze is not diminished at all.
Drawing number four is the one with the most realistic detailing. The pose is a more interesting one than the straight-on one. The body is in profile and the head is turned towards us. The highlights on the face and the shadows are what truly make this image the best on the page.
A casual look at portraits might lead you to think they are basically the same. It's not till you look at them in depth that you realise how unique each one is. Have a great time going through Berry's work and your Friday.
