American Artist Paul Smith created all of these drawings just using a typewriter. He was born in 1921 with severe spastic cerebral palsy, which causes neurological problems. In his particular case, he was not able to eat, clothe, or bathe unaided and had difficulty expressing himself in words. He was unable to hold a pencil or a paintbrush, but when he turned 11, he found he could express himself through art, by using a typewriter his neighbour had discarded. He would steady one hand with the other and started creating drawings that eventually became more complex and in colour. He even found out that if he pushed his thumb on the ribbon he could produce shadows on the image. It is reported that he spent 2 to 3 hours a day drawing, taking him between 2 weeks to 3 months to complete one. It is estimated that through out his lifetime he created more than 400 drawings. He was a good Chess and Cribbage player and had a love for classical music. He died in 2007, the video below chronicles more of his life and his drawings.

Sculpture Recycled
No comments:
American Sculptor Jeremy Mayer uses all the components of typewriters to create these mechanical creatures. He describes his mode of construction as cold assembly, he uses no soldering no welding and no gluing and only uses parts from typewriters for his sculptures. The majority of machines he gets are unusable and does not clean the components when he reassembles them in his creations, as he feels it adds more character to the finish product. When a typewriter is disassembled, the components are sorted by colour and size so that it becomes easier for Mayer, to use every element in the right place in the sculpture.

The following statement from British Artist and Upcycle + Recycle Sculptor Alan Williams, goes a long way to explaining how he started in his craft, "I started making things when I was a young lad using old toys and a tube of glue. Now it's grinders and welders". Amazing talent is needed to visualise a form, an animal, in most of the cases below and then using pre-shaped recycled metals to build and give them life. We have added detailed pictures so that you can appreciate the artistry that went into these beautifully proportioned creatures.

Jennifer Collier uses paper the same way other artists use cloth and more rigid materials. @paperjennifer uses various ways to work with this material, that most people see as a flimsy medium, by bonding, waxing, trapping, but mostly stitching. Collier uses old maps books and paper that are destined for recycling or landfill. We have included a video that shows Collier's amazing process in action. Once in the article you can enlarge the image by pressing it (not the first one). Enjoy...

Yes guys that is exactly what they are, made of cardboard, these are really well constructed. We have added details in the article so that you can appreciate the work even more. Chris Gilmour originally from the UK, now lives and works in Italy. He makes objects that have a function and memories for him and wanted to work with a material that doesn't have such a long artistic history such as, marble or bronze would have, no comparisons with the past. Chris Gilmour has now started using recycled cardboard for his work.

Taiwanese Designer Austin Yang is the creator of the "iTypewriter" an old style typewriter to be used for your iPad. He wanted to recapture the old feeling of the typewriter's weighted keys. We are not sure if the volume is turned up too high, or if the keys are hitting the screen with too much force, but that does not sound too good. This video made an appearance on YouTube some time ago and we have found no sign of it, being constructed commercially. If you are one of those people that have not made the leap to electronic devices, or that likes all things retro, this is for you. Below a video to show how it works.

Drawing the Fantastic and Surreal World of Hoekstra
We featured Visual Artist and Illustrator Redmer Hoekstra for the first time, almost a year ago "Surreal Animals". Today we bring you more of his Fantastic and Surreal work. He has always had an interest in the internal mechanisms of things, reinventing them, associating inanimate objects with animated ones and sometimes inanimate with inanimate. The drawings are all achieved using ink on paper and it is very important that they are as realistic as possible, to sell the effect. Were a drawing did not have a title we have added one to them. Each Drawing roughly take 30 to 40 hours to complete.

We have featured a lot of Sculptures derived from Recycled items, but the craftsmanship and details, Edouard Martinet demonstrates in these wonderful pieces, shows off what an incredible artist he is. One of the things we really appreciate on this site, that very few artist do, is to list the items they use for their recycled sculptures, in our opinion it really adds to the finish product. All the pieces are fastened together using tiny screws no soldering. Have a look at the video for more information about Martinet and his process. Which is your favourite one? Let us know at the bottom in the comment section. To get the best effect, once in the article you can enlarge the image by pressing it (not the first one).
