Italian Architect and Artist from Quilly Paper Design uses paper to make jewelry earrings, bracelets and necklaces.  The method she uses to shape the paper is called Quilling.  Quilling is an art form that uses a number strips of paper rolled up to accomplish a more complex design.  As you may have guessed we have not been able to discover the name of this artist, but what we have been able to find out is that, all her creations are made from recycled paper and that the attraction for this form of art, started when she bought a book for her little girl, that explained how to create quilling designs.

Recycled Container House

To me this project shows how, scarcely utilised a potential asset like shipping containers are.  Yes there are small scale projects here and there that use containers, once they have reached the end of the life as maritime freight, but mainstream Architecture and Engineering have not really embraced these cheap building blocks to their full potential.  Architect Benjamin Garcia Saxe constructed a home in San Jose, Costa Rica, which was very inexpensive compared to traditional buildings, that allowed the owners to live debt free, without having to compromise with design and functionality.  The house allows for spectacular views thanks to the amount of glass used.

Nicholas Hrabowski started his business when, having always loved skeleton watches, he decided to buy for himself, a pair of watch movement cufflinks.  When he realised that, what was out there was not to his taste, he made them for himself.  Hrabowski has now made a business out of it, with many different variations in design.  Hrabowski uses all sorts of recycled parts, from watch cases and movements to bullets to create these very unique Steampunk Jewelry pieces.

A Second Life for Recycled Book Sculpting

Long-Bin Chen is able to carve, out of date books, newspapers, magazines and computer paper, into what looks from afar, like a marble of wooden sculpture.  This is just a very small part of the tons of paper that go to waste every year.  Making art out of refuse should not be seen as a solution to the problem of waste, but as an indication that these materials still have a value, a use after their primary life is over.  As a second life, that these lovely sculptures, express only part, of their potential. If production of paper can't be helped, at least we can put it to good use, after we are finished, with one of its uses.

The following statement from British Artist and Upcycle + Recycle Sculptor Alan Williams, goes a long way to explaining how he started in his craft, "I started making things when I was a young lad using old toys and a tube of glue. Now it's grinders and welders".  Amazing talent is needed to visualise a form, an animal, in most of the cases below and then using pre-shaped recycled metals to build and give them life.  We have added detailed pictures so that you can appreciate the artistry that went into these beautifully proportioned creatures.

Arturas Tamasauskas is a Lithuanian Artist that likes to get bits an pieces of discarded items like, watches cutlery, shells, car parts, piping and many many more... recycling and upcycling them to make these lovely little sculptures.  Where most people would see a piece of junk that should either go into the recycle pile or the bin, Tamasauskas sees a part to his newest sculpture.  By all accounts birds are the sculptures he most likes to represent due to their particular physiology.  See if you can identify all of the components that form these imaginative sculptures, it is amazing when you really look at the detail.

London based Artist Nick Gentry, constructs his canvas using: 35mm film negatives, VHS cassettes, X-ray prints, and floppy discs.  The assembly is not a random one, he has an idea of the image he is going to paint and he carefully positions his materials to create, contours, shades of light and dark, that are going to form part, of his painted piece.  He receives his materials from the public, who send him the items listed above, with a small description of what they contain.  The video below goes into more detail regarding his technique.

We have featured a lot of Sculptures derived from Recycled items, but the craftsmanship and details, Edouard Martinet demonstrates in these wonderful pieces, shows off what an incredible artist he is.  One of the things we really appreciate on this site, that very few artist do, is to list the items they use for their recycled sculptures, in our opinion it really adds to the finish product.  All the pieces are fastened together using tiny screws no soldering.  Have a look at the video for more information about Martinet and his process.  Which is your favourite one?  Let us know at the bottom in the comment section.  To get the best effect, once in the article you can enlarge the image by pressing it (not the first one).
