Europe and North Africa featured through their architectural drawings.
Polish artist Katarzyna Kmiecik drew all of the buildings you see on this page.
Graphite was used to bring these buildings. streets and people to life. A house, apartments, a church, a mosque and a couple of cityscapes. These last ones give the view a more complete structure and one that allows a greater understanding of the place.
All of the replicas of the real-life structure are completed with utter attention to detail. Even the clouds have been lovingly placed, highlighted and shaded to look like the real thing. The few drawings that showcase them seem to be enhanced, thanks to the added interest they provide.
So many building designs with various styles. So many favourites for all sorts of different reasons. Two details that are not usually present in architectural drawings are cars and people. In some of these representations, Kmiecik makes a point to add them to the life and and vibrancy of the place depicted.
If I had to pick one drawing, it would be one not many would go for. That is the third drawing down, the one of Ljubljana. A little street on an incline veering to the right and eventually disappearing behind the buildings. It's one of the least glamorous ones. The buildings seem to be stained by dirt and seemingly nothing stands out. I love how packed with detailing it is and the plethora of information it conveys. There are also shadows painted by the sun, replicating the shapes of the buildings the rays encounter before hitting these buildings. Compared to the others, you would dismiss this image as not as impressive. That said, the more you spend on this drawing, the more you find and discover about it. Use my words as a starting point. Then add your own observations and you might see what I do...
After this exercise, you still have all of the rest of the drawings to look forward to.
