If not a way of solving the problems with our throwaway society, at least an inspirational example of thinking out of the box. Giving value to the recycled items, most of us would discard, without a second thought.

Gabriel Dishaw, is an Artist that uses his imagination, to focus our attention, on to the amount of items we send to the landfill every year. It all started when he was at school in 9th grade, during an art class his teacher gave the students, 30 possible options for an art project, Dishaw chose "Junk Art" and he won 1st price, in the 3D category. As mentioned above he is hoping that his art continues the conversation that more and more people are having around the word, to curb our seemingly insatiable appetite for waste. Among his themes we have chosen his Star Wars one, for today's post.

A Second Life for Recycled Book Sculpting
Long-Bin Chen is able to carve, out of date books, newspapers, magazines and computer paper, into what looks from afar, like a marble of wooden sculpture. This is just a very small part of the tons of paper that go to waste every year. Making art out of refuse should not be seen as a solution to the problem of waste, but as an indication that these materials still have a value, a use after their primary life is over. As a second life, that these lovely sculptures, express only part, of their potential. If production of paper can't be helped, at least we can put it to good use, after we are finished, with one of its uses.

Upcycling Keys to make sculptures and Accessories
Michael Moerkerk aka (Moerkey) describes his workspace as: "small space in our garage which is jammed packed with bikes, camping gear, woodworking tools and timber and now numerous bits of old copper pipe, keys and pennies which are the raw materials from which I create these works of art". Below are some of his key sculptures for us to enjoy and be inspired by, finding a different use for items, that have reached the end of their usable life.

Architecture in Upcycled Furniture and Suitcase Sculptures
All forms of upcycling are special and in most cases unique, Ted Lott's creations are no different. He takes items that have a history, one of more owners that have spent time, shared experiences with their possessions. In the case of the suitcase they have literally been on a journey. Lott takes these items and gives them and architectural feel making them in to small habitations. We love how he keeps the wood from the Architectural part bare, so that we can easily distinguish the old from the new, but appreciate how well they are integrated with one another.

The following statement from British Artist and Upcycle + Recycle Sculptor Alan Williams, goes a long way to explaining how he started in his craft, "I started making things when I was a young lad using old toys and a tube of glue. Now it's grinders and welders". Amazing talent is needed to visualise a form, an animal, in most of the cases below and then using pre-shaped recycled metals to build and give them life. We have added detailed pictures so that you can appreciate the artistry that went into these beautifully proportioned creatures.

This story all starts with Jeny Buckley, who has a store where, as well as displaying vintage items, decided to make a bit more with a box of spoons she bought at a garage sale. Her creations, labels, tags, and wedding favours, were favoured by both family and friends. Her husband, Jim Rice, was inspired by her work and having had a long life ambition to build his own chopper, decided to create his own spoon custom Motorcycles. The design and detail have become more elaborate as the time has progressed, to the point where, he uses the beautiful details of the spoons to increase the overall look of the bikes.
