A nighttime collection of cats and dogs and one shark.
Benjamin Thomas drew all of the animals you see on this page.
I mention cats in the first paragraph and the title. I just want to make clear that it includes both small and big cats. In fact, there is a lovely selection of the latter. Felines like a lion, a panther, a leopard, a puma and a tiger.
All of the animals appear to sport, to varying degrees, a minimalist kind of approach to their depiction. One that is beautifully balanced and gives you the sense of the mass of the animal. This seems to happen, even though all of the details are not in place. I think that a perfect example of this is the last drawing on the page. Specifically, the nose hair and teeth of the dog. It's not a WIP. This is the finished piece. I have never seen a finished drawing like this and it looks great.
The first drawing, by contrast, does something similar, but in a different way. The silhouette of the animal is drawn and the steam from the big cat adds to its corporeal presence. The rest of the drawings play on beautiful and well though through variations of these concepts.
