To me this project shows how, scarcely utilised a potential asset like shipping containers are.  Yes there are small scale projects here and there that use containers, once they have reached the end of the life as maritime freight, but mainstream Architecture and Engineering have not really embraced these cheap building blocks to their full potential.  Architect Benjamin Garcia Saxe constructed a home in San Jose, Costa Rica, which was very inexpensive compared to traditional buildings, that allowed the owners to live debt free, without having to compromise with design and functionality.  The house allows for spectacular views thanks to the amount of glass used.

Progressive Architecture using Container Buildings

Container Building, "Condominio P" (Condominium - Apartment Block) is the brainchild of Italian Architects C+C04 Studio.  They sought a site in Cagliari (Southern Italy) surrounded by mostly buildings erected in the 1930-50s that went through a kind of modernisation during the 1990s, where dull was the colour of choice and bland was the design brief.  With this project C+C04 Studio aspired to make the building, therefore the surrounding area, colourful, light airy and individual.  Every apartment has a different floor pan with the apartment number painted on the outside amongst the colourful facade.  The Architects are hoping that this project will spark a light, that will lead to a creative change in the re-design of the area.  The Floor Plans are at the bottom of the post.

This project was a collaboration between Architects Ceardean and Builders Ripple, to re-fit this 40 by 10 feet (12m by 3m) container into a 6 person Home.  This project was started and finished in 3 days last year with up to 60 contractors working on it. The container home has been donated to the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul (SVP) for emergency accommodation.  It has been designed to allow craftsmen with relatively low skill levels to be able to replicate the design, Ceardean have published plans and details to make this happen.  The cost of the conversion was 55,000 Euros but they believe that the costs can be cut to 25-35,000 Euros.
As well as many images and one video, we have included a link to another more complete video that we were not able to embed, this is the link: http://bcove.me/kq0zx5l5

Ganti & Associates entered a world wide competition called superskyscrapers, with the brief to provide temporary accommodation for the densely populated Dharavi Slum in Mumbai, India, using shipping containers.  Their proposal won the 1st prise in the 2015 competition.  Their building consisted of a frame that supports a repeated pattern of containers 100m (328 feet) 32 storey high.  Each apartment is made up by 3 containers (40’ Long X 8’ Wide X 8’6” High) (12.1m X 2.4m X 2.6m) staggered to attain a visually pleasing design.  The floor above cantilevers over the floor below to create a covered corridor.  The building would generate both solar and wind power to make the habitation more affordable, you can see more in the images below.

LOT-EK is an incredible company driven by Ada Tolla and Giuseppe Lignano to upcycle materials to construct homes.  They have a lot of experience with modifying 40 foot (12m) shipping containers, in all sorts of different configurations, for both Commercial and Residential use.  The advantages of this resource is: Sustainability, Modularity (lego  kind of construction), Durability (they are built to last),  Efficiency (the building is erected a lot faster).  The one we are featuring today is a MDU (Mobile Dwelling Unit) designed for the owner to take around the world.  When in transit the sub-volumes (the parts that stick out of the container) are pushed in allowing it to be transported like a normal container.

10m² Coffee Shop in Japan

This small coffee shop, sat on a small triangular area with a footprint of just 10m² (108 sq. feet) is located in one of the most affluent districts of Tokyo, Harajuku, in Japan.  The envelope of the building seems to have been made of various containers stitched together with the main one sat on end.  Hiroshi Sawada, barista and owner of Streamer Coffee Company, which he founded in 2010.  He has 3 coffee shops at the moment and prides himself with giving all of his costumers a very personable service and the very best coffee.   The  Harajuku building has two extra floors above the ground floor, with a small balcony on the top floor.  Every floor has windows with views of the street, with free wi-fi to allow their costumers to keep in touch, while they relax on the comfortable sofas.  There are two small benches outside to accommodate more costumers on a nice day  We can do with more of these, one off buildings to make our cities  more interesting and diverse.  We have tried to get as many pictures for you to get a feel of this lovely quaint Coffee Shop.  Once in the article you can enlarge the image by pressing it (not the first one).  Via archwanders.

Upcycled & Recycled Architectural G-Pod

The G-Pod... imagine extending out a 20 Foot shipping container, the way most top-end RVs (recreational vehicles) do. The makers say that when fully extended it can almost triple its floor area.  It can be transported all over the world and can be used as an office, pop-up venue, student accommodation, home or vacations retreat.  Because of its modular structure, more components can be added if necessary.  The standard structure is a 20 foot container 1 Bed 1 WC Shower room and kitchen / lounge with foldable windows leading to the deck. Or the 40 foot container that has 1 double room and a room for 2 single beds.  They offer a number of variations on the floor plans to suit your needs.

Another way to recycle old shipping containers.  This apparently simple system is a a complex farm unit that allows growth of vegetables fish and also extraction of methane, as a by product of the fish water filtration.  Damien Chivialle came up with this novel use of used equipment.
Complete System.
