Magic in the Sand Drawings

American Artist Andres Amador creates these fantastic doodles in the sand.  He originally started with very defined and rigid geometric shapes, he says that one of his early inspirations were crop circles.  He then evolved into more organic and fluid shapes that would allow him to complement the undulations of the land.  We have included a video that tells you a bit more about his work and plenty of pictures to enjoy.

Sand Art From 1880–1886

American Artist Andrew Clemens (1857 - 1894) created these incredible sand sculptures, just stacking the different coloured granules to create the image without the use of any glue.  When he was very young Clemens suffered from encephalitis which rendered him death and not able to speak.  He would collect the different, naturally occurring sands, himself and sort them in different jars, as a painter would do in his paints.  It is said that his first works were of simple geometric images, that then became more and more intricate with shadows and complex designs.  To date he is thought to be the inventor of this art and its only practitioner.  At the time he would sell his work for $5–7 in 2012 one sold for  $45,000.  He is thought to have made hundreds but only a few survive today. Sand is a very fluid medium with which to make art and is one of Kseniya Simonova's favourite ways of expressing her artistic flair.  Originally from Crimea, in South of Ukraine, she is the daughter of an artist, who introduced her to a creative world from an early age.  @SimonovaTV created these static images but also videos of how she produces her art.  We have included a video in the article that shows  Simonova transitioning from one drawing to another without interruptions.  Enjoy...

Wet Sand And Play-Doh

As the title suggests this is sand that has some of the characteristics of Play-Doh.  It is made from 98% sand and 2% polymer.  Brookstone sell this product that brings the beach to your home, with out all the problems associate with the sand you find on the beach.  It is soft and stretchy, it sticks to itself but not to your fingers. does not dry out and it is non toxic.  As well as the photographs we have included two videos to showcase the properties better, (the videos are really worth looking at).

Superheroes in the 1600s

French Photographer Sacha Goldberger inspired by Flemish paintings, mostly the ones from famous Dutch painter Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn from the 1600s.  Goldberger imagines how the painter would have depicted superheroes and characters from films, had they been part of the folklore of the time.  Amongst the films he covers are: Batman, Spider-Man, Star Wars, X-Men Wolverine, Superman, The Hulk, Wonder Woman, Iron Man, Captain America and many more...

Architecture - Joysxee Island, Living on Recycling

This post will cover the story of Artist Richart Sowa and how he went about building his man made islands. The first Island, was called Spiral Island and constructed in 1998, which was washed ashore by hurricane Emily in 2005.  In 2008 he built Joysxee Island that is now opened for tours.  Here are some stats for Spiral Island: he used strong nets to hold 250,000 recycled plastic bottles on which he lay plywood and bamboo, sand on top of this, plus planting and a 2 story house with composting toilet and a solar oven.  The mangroves he planted kept the structure so solidly together, that it was beached almost intact on shore after the hurricane (see the first video).  The second one, Joysxee Island is featured in the second video below, where Richart Sowa talks us through all of the ingenuous living comforts he built in to it and his future plans.
