Vintage Camera Sculptures Made of Books and Maps

Born in Taiwan and now living in California, in the US, Ching Ching Cheng, has always had an interest in machinery and the way they work.  She has now found a way to combine her interest in machinery with her love for art, in these sculptural recreations of camera equipment made of paper.  Cheng uses paper from recycled books, maps and film negatives, all glued together, to form the interesting retro Camera sculptures.

An all together different use of maps, Artist Paul Morstad uses Cartographic Maps as a base for his paintings and collages. He draws inspirations from the animal life and nature from his native Vancouver in Canada.  Monstad uses a variety of techniques to compile his work including Collage, Water Colour, Gouache and Oil Paints.

Food Maps

These Food Map Photographs were born from the collaboration of Caitlin Levin and Henry Hargreaves.  As well as reproducing the footprint very accurately they use the food the Country or Continent are famous for, with each region delineated by variations of that food.  We have included a video that explains the project from the point of view of the creators.

Jason LaFerrera has had a very varied life, starting as a music producer, performer and recording engineer, then moved onto Maths & Computer Science.  Today we are going to look at his animal maps.  For him the association of animals and maps, represents the boundaries we put around nature.  "The patterns of forests and shores often become an animal's feathers or fur, while the rings of topography often trace out wings or antlers."  He uses uses his computer and images of maps, to bring to life his lovely animals.

Software from Google Earth Creates Surreal Art

Clement Valla, a Brooklyn based artist, with a background in Architecture, has collected these strange satellite renditions from Google Earth, which he calls "Postcards From Google Earth".  He says that at first he thought that they were glitches of the program but when he examined how the software works that stitches the pictures, he came up with the following explanation.  These images are not all taken from the same source at the same angle, the same height from earth, or at the same time of day with the same lighting.  The pictures are taken by automated cameras, maps, pilots, engineers, photographers, surveyors and map-makers.  The software at Google, has to take all of these pictures and make them look like, as much as possible, as they have matching angles, lighting and scale.  When altering the images to achieve this, it has to compensate for the properties the picture lacks and this is when you we these fantastic renderings that gives the picture a surreal and impossible view.

The Hobbit Watercolors 2

Conceptual 3D Illustration for iPhone Patent Application

Apple have submitted a Patent Application to create 3D images. 3D Artist and Animator Mike Ko creates a conceptual animation of what this technology could look like on an iPhone. We have included a Video that show the Animation, a Gif Animation that shows how the various parts of the scenery have gone together.  Images that can be enlarged, if you press them (not the first image or the Gif). What function would you want to see the 3D phone perform? Examples like, the image of the caller in 3D, google maps as you were seeing it through street view in Google, what else? Stitched Paper Sculptures

Jennifer Collier uses paper the same way other artists use cloth and more rigid materials.   @paperjennifer uses various ways to work with this material, that most people see as a flimsy medium, by bonding, waxing, trapping, but mostly stitching.  Collier uses old maps books and paper that are destined for recycling or landfill.  We have included a video that shows Collier's amazing process in action.  Once in the article you can enlarge the image by pressing it (not the first one).  Enjoy...

Alice in Wonderland on Book Pages

Canadian based artist Jackie Bassett uses old books, maps, pressed flowers, vintage photos and many more mediums to create her art on.  We have picked her Alice in Wonderland themed work from the many other on her site.  There are different variations of the same pictures that can be seen lower down in the article.  This is not a new way of producing art, but it is a fitting use of damaged, no longer used paper.  We are not advocating pulling apart perfectly good books, but if the alternative is Landfills or even Recycle Boxes, this is in our opinion, a better use.  What do you think?  Let us know in the comment section below.  To get the best effect, once in the article you can enlarge the image by pressing it (not the first one).
