With our cities becoming more and more congested, it is becoming very difficult and more expensive to find a place to live in. A bit of lateral thinking is what is needed, Architectural practice Lamp give us an example of the new type of ingenuity we need to adopt if we are going to make more liveable space in our cities. They made a Flat from what used to be an underground public toilet. Before you switch off in disgust look at it and tell me if you wouldn't live in it. The Flat / Apartment is in Crystal Palace south London in the UK.
it is a 1 Bedroom, about, 56 m2 600 square feet, it comes with internal garden (I am guessing it originally Toilets had 2 entrances Male and Female and 1 was retained for the entrance to the flat and the other one closed off, the stairs were removed and made into a garden). Fantastic natural lighting you would not guess from the pictures that you were underground.

This is update on one of our first and most popular posts the Cube Micro House. In this article we see how things have progressed since then. The Cube Micro House is 4m x 3m (12m²) and it is 3m high (13.1 x 9.8 x 9.8 Feet) (129 Square Feet). We usually talk through the pictures with observations, but in this case, British Engineer Mike Page does a brilliant job in the video, so we have decided to run a comparison with the Canadian Micro House 9.2m², which we featured a few weeks ago, as it is a similar concept but they made different design choices.

It is amazing how a big thing like constructing a building can come from a chance purchase of a Brass Sink. Brian Schulz who teaches how to build Kayaks by profession, found himself in a Recycle Centre where, an impulse buy saw him the new owner of this Brass Sink. When trying to figure out what he was going to do with it he decided to build a house around it. He was inspired by the traditional Japanese Minka home construction. The house sits on an 18m2 (200 square foot) concrete pad. Most of the items used for the build came from recycled sources within a 10 mile radius and it cost him about $11,000. One of the most expensive items was the concrete foundation. The house has 1 bedroom, Kitchen, Living / Dining Area with a wood burning stove that takes care of the Heating and Cooking. It seems to have running water but no electricity? The toilet is in an outhouse next to the house. Schulz says this project will never end, as there will always be something else to add. Video with explanation in the Article.

Angelo Mastropietro bought and carved a home from a cave in the side of the hill, dating back 700 years. The Rockhouse, as it is now known, is set on a 3 acre site in Worcestershire, England. Mastropietro did most of the heavy work, to make this five rooms, into a habitable space. The video below will give you more information about the process. Following is a sum-up of the stats: Buying the site cost £62,000 (about $87,000) He removed, by hand 70 to 80 tons of rubble, that now makes up the patio. It measures 65m² (about 700ft²). It has Wi-Fi. Indoor and Outdoor Shower. Kitchen, Toilet, Dining Room and a large Double Bedroom. More pictures below.

Another Micro Apartment that makes very good use of a small Apartment, that used to be a pigeon loft. The Apartment is on the 5th floor and you have to climb 100 steps to get to it. Christian Schallert takes his inspiration from space saving and furniture used on boats and Japanese Architecture. The Bed actually stores under the Lower Balcony platform. There is a further balcony on top of the roof as can be seen on the image above. The Apartment is situated in Barcelona, Spain and measures 24m² which is 258 square feet. Via faircompanies

Nomad Micro Homes is the brain child of Canadian Ian Lorne Kent. This House has a really small footprint that stands at 9.2m² (100 square feet). The list of features in this Micro House is quite extensive. Nothing new but it seems to include a lot of the best sustainability features out there. Kent is currently trying to raise the money he needs for production from Indiegogo. He is marketing the assembled house at under $30,000. The Micro Home will include: Living Room and kitchen area, Shower and WC Room, Stairs, sleeping area, on the 1st floor. The article includes a video and images with more information. Right at the bottom we have added all the specs.
