All forms of upcycling are special and in most cases unique, Ted Lott's creations are no different. He takes items that have a history, one of more owners that have spent time, shared experiences with their possessions. In the case of the suitcase they have literally been on a journey. Lott takes these items and gives them and architectural feel making them in to small habitations. We love how he keeps the wood from the Architectural part bare, so that we can easily distinguish the old from the new, but appreciate how well they are integrated with one another.

Canadian Artist David Irvine first came up with the idea in 2004, after rescuing a table from the trash. After fixing it and painting it, he saw the potential artistic treasure trove hidden in what we discard and give little value to. He set up Gnarled Branch and started buying cheap, old art from thrift shops and second hand markets, adding his own touch to make them more quirky and something people would give a second look at. You could call this, a form of recycling and up-cycling.

The following statement from British Artist and Upcycle + Recycle Sculptor Alan Williams, goes a long way to explaining how he started in his craft, "I started making things when I was a young lad using old toys and a tube of glue. Now it's grinders and welders". Amazing talent is needed to visualise a form, an animal, in most of the cases below and then using pre-shaped recycled metals to build and give them life. We have added detailed pictures so that you can appreciate the artistry that went into these beautifully proportioned creatures.

Arturas Tamasauskas is a Lithuanian Artist that likes to get bits an pieces of discarded items like, watches cutlery, shells, car parts, piping and many many more... recycling and upcycling them to make these lovely little sculptures. Where most people would see a piece of junk that should either go into the recycle pile or the bin, Tamasauskas sees a part to his newest sculpture. By all accounts birds are the sculptures he most likes to represent due to their particular physiology. See if you can identify all of the components that form these imaginative sculptures, it is amazing when you really look at the detail.

With a background in collage and mixed media, KerryMiller takes in and revamps discarded books that other people would normally throw away, or have them recycled. When @KerryMi89534986 starts he process of salvage, she only uses the images that are in that book, using ink and watercolours to add a bit more depth and colour in her 3D compositions. These works give these books a second life that might have never have seen, had it not been for her and serve to inspire like minded people as to the possibilities for things that are all around us, sitting in a darkened corner, falling apart. With books going digital in increasing numbers, Miller thinks that this is the right time “to re-imagine the book.” To get the best effect, once in the article you can enlarge the image by pressing it (not the first one).

Gabriel Dishaw, is an Artist that uses his imagination, to focus our attention, on to the amount of items we send to the landfill every year. It all started when he was at school in 9th grade, during an art class his teacher gave the students, 30 possible options for an art project, Dishaw chose "Junk Art" and he won 1st price, in the 3D category. As mentioned above he is hoping that his art continues the conversation that more and more people are having around the word, to curb our seemingly insatiable appetite for waste. Among his themes we have chosen his Star Wars one, for today's post.

American artist Belle from ReImaginationPrints, and this is all we have managed to find out about her, is an artist and a book lover, which she manages to marry together, in her book page prints. Belle accomplishes this, by finding old and damaged dictionaries and books, carefully salvaging the the pages that are intact and then printing on them digitally enhanced old pictures, vintage illustration and some of her own art. The prints below come from a dictionary that is 115 years old.

Kozo Lamps are made out of upcycled iron pipes, with which they construct a fantastic array of designs. David Shefa and Anati Shefa head the little team that construct these very versatile lighting sculptures. These are some of the lighting options they cater for: desk lamps, table lamps, shelf lamps, wall fixtures & sconces, ceiling fixtures, pendants and even chandeliers. We have included two short videos to show the details and specifically the switch, which is not a conventional one and is activated by a tap. The G-Pod... imagine extending out a 20 Foot shipping container, the way most top-end RVs (recreational vehicles) do. The makers say that when fully extended it can almost triple its floor area. It can be transported all over the world and can be used as an office, pop-up venue, student accommodation, home or vacations retreat. Because of its modular structure, more components can be added if necessary. The standard structure is a 20 foot container 1 Bed 1 WC Shower room and kitchen / lounge with foldable windows leading to the deck. Or the 40 foot container that has 1 double room and a room for 2 single beds. They offer a number of variations on the floor plans to suit your needs.
